The Methodology

Science.
Not shortcuts.

One Signal is built on the Big Five — the only personality framework with 50+ years of peer-reviewed, cross-cultural validation and demonstrated predictive validity for real-world outcomes.

The Framework

Why the Big Five
and not MBTI.

Most consumer personality tools are based on frameworks with low scientific rigor, poor test-retest reliability, and limited predictive validity. The Big Five is different. It is the consensus framework of personality psychology — the result of decades of independent research, cross-cultural replication, and real-world validation.

"When personality is measured correctly, it predicts work performance at levels comparable to cognitive ability."

The OCEAN Model

Five dimensions.
One complete picture.

Big Five traits measure stable, meaningful dimensions of personality that emerge independently in every culture studied. Each dimension predicts different real-world outcomes.

O
Openness
Openness to Experience
High scorer

Imaginative, creative, intellectually curious, drawn to novelty and abstract thinking.

Low scorer

Practical, conventional, detail-oriented, preferring familiar routines and concrete information.

PredictsCreative performance, learning agility, adaptability to change, entrepreneurship.
C
Conscientiousness
Conscientiousness
High scorer

Organized, disciplined, thorough, reliable, goal-directed, and deliberate.

Low scorer

Flexible, spontaneous, less rule-bound — can be impulsive or struggle with follow-through.

PredictsJob performance across virtually every occupation. Academic success. Health outcomes.
E
Extraversion
Extraversion
High scorer

Energized by people and external stimulation. Assertive, talkative, optimistic.

Low scorer

Energized by solitude. Reflective, reserved, careful — not shy, but independently powered.

PredictsSales performance, leadership emergence, social relationship quality, subjective wellbeing.
A
Agreeableness
Agreeableness
High scorer

Cooperative, empathic, trusting, prosocial — prioritizes harmony and others' needs.

Low scorer

Competitive, skeptical, challenging — prioritizes outcomes and not afraid to create friction.

PredictsTeam performance, relationship satisfaction, negotiation style, customer service quality.
N
Emotional Stability
Neuroticism (inverted)
High scorer

Resilient, calm under pressure, recovers quickly from setbacks, stable mood baseline.

Low scorer

High sensitivity to stress, emotional reactivity, ruminative — with heightened empathy and pattern recognition as benefits.

PredictsStress tolerance, job burnout risk, mental health outcomes, relationship stability.
The Evidence

Peer-reviewed
and replicated.

One Signal's instrument design is grounded in five decades of published research. The following studies are representative of the field's findings.

Barrick & Mount (1991)
Personnel Psychology

Meta-analysis across 117 studies showing Conscientiousness predicts job performance in virtually all occupational groups.

Judge et al. (2002)
Journal of Vocational Behavior

Extraversion and Conscientiousness both significantly predict leadership effectiveness across organizational contexts.

Soto et al. (2011)
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology

Big Five personality traits are stable across cultures and measure meaningfully distinct constructs.

Roberts et al. (2007)
Perspectives on Psychological Science

Personality traits predict mortality, divorce, occupational attainment with effect sizes comparable to socioeconomic status.

Hogan & Holland (2003)
Journal of Applied Psychology

When personality is measured correctly, it predicts work performance at levels comparable to cognitive ability.

The Instrument

Beyond the Big Five.
Four layers.

One Signal extends the Big Five backbone with three additional layers no consumer tool has combined in a single instrument.

01
Big Five Backbone

The scientific foundation. 50+ years of peer-reviewed, cross-cultural validation. Non-negotiable for credibility and eventual enterprise licensing.

Scientific rigor ●●●●●
02
Motivational Lens

A proprietary motivational typology that captures the "why behind the behavior" — the emotional layer that drives the moment of recognition when someone reads their results.

Consumer engagement ●●●●●
03
Derailer Index

A validated battery identifying career-limiting patterns under stress. Enterprise tools charge $400+ for this. One Signal includes it at the $9 report tier.

No consumer equivalent
04
AI Coaching Layer

Personalized intelligence trained on the instrument's own accumulating data — not generic AI on a free framework. The moat is the data, not the model.

Honest Limitations

What One Signal
is not.

Intellectual honesty matters. One Signal is a consumer assessment built on validated science — not a certified clinical instrument. There are things it is designed to do and things it is not.

"Use One Signal for self-understanding, coaching conversations, and team development. Do not use it as the sole basis for hiring decisions — no single assessment should be."

One Signal usage guidelines

The free assessment provides a reliable snapshot of your trait profile. The $9 report deepens that picture with your Derailer Index, career application guide, and team compatibility map. For enterprise hiring applications, we recommend pairing One Signal with a certified Hogan or Predictive Index assessment.
